Tips for Maintaining a Turbocharged Diesel Engine

Diesel engines are remarkably reliable and efficient compared to their petrol-powered counterparts. Thanks to their high compression ratio, increased torque and power output, and rugged dependability, diesel engines are mostly used in heavy vehicles and machinery and also fuel-efficient family cars and public transport vehicles.

Most diesel engines are fitted with a turbocharger, like the 7.3 powerstroke turbo. The turbocharger helps improve the efficiency of the engine, reduce emissions, and increase the power output. However, to rip the full benefits of a turbocharged diesel engine, you need to ensure that you take care of the essential components of the engine.

Change the Oil, Air, and Fuel Filter Regularly

The various oil, fuel, and air filters in the engine need to be cleaned and replace after some time. These filters can easily clog up with dust, dirt, and debris from repeated use. Clogged up filters may restrict the flow of essential fluids and air to various parts of the engine – including the turbocharger. When this happens, the turbocharge may drastically increase its lag and fail to deliver the expected boost.

Check the Coolant and Additives

Diesel engines typically run hotter than petrol engines. They also have a heavier thicker engine block, which retains more heat for longer. Always make sure that the coolant levels are in the green, and the circulation is flawless. Additives can also help improve the efficiency and durability of the coolant fluid.    

Warm Up Your Engine Before Loading the Power

Unlike petrol engines, you can’t just start a diesel engine from rest and go, especially if it’s been sitting for some time. You have to give it some time to warm up, idle the engine for some few minutes to warm the oil, and circulate it to the turbocharger and other vital components. Diesel engines are designed with high-temperature tolerances in mind, running a cold engine can result in catastrophic failure and even damage of some parts.  

Finally, schedule a routine servicing schedule with a professional mechanic. Take your vehicle to the service station or have a technician come around to inspect as service your engine as per the manufacturer’s recommendation.
