As much as you’d want to disagree, pistons require to be inspected and cleaned at regular intervals to prevent them from running out of good condition too soon. The lifespan of a piston depends entirely on how well has it been maintained through its span. With time, there is a build up of carbon deposits on most pistons which can gradually end up causing a considerable amount of damage to your automobile’s engine if not attended to at the right time. There are a number of fuel additives available to help clean these carbon deposits off the piston. However, this needs to be done carefully to avoid damage to the pistons or the piston rings. The most careful step should be of removing the piston from the cylinder before cleaning it.
While there are a plethora of cleaning solvents available, petroleum based solvents perform the job of cleaning the piston best. A cleaning agent such as Marvel Mystery Oil can be put in the fuel tank to dissolve not just the pre-existing carbon deposits but also to prevent the build up of carbon in ner future.
If however the piston has a build up of very large quantities of carbon deposits, the cleaning agent to be used should be of better quality and strength such as Sea Foam or GM Top Cleaner. These cleaning agents should be added to some water in a bucket and the piston should be soaked in the solution for atleast a period of 5 hours. You can later use a wire brush for better cleaning and treatment. You must keep in mind, however, to cover the bores on either sides of the piston to prevent them from getting damaged. Also, you must be on the lookout for any dirt or nicks seen on the grooves of the piston ring and in case there are any you can clean them with diesel oil or kerosene and a broken ring.
If by looking at the piston, you think they are worn out beyond scope of repair and that cleaning agents will fail to work on them, you must consider replacing the piston. While many high quality pistons are readily available in the market, there would still be a good amount of research required to determine which piston will be best suitable for your engine.
You must be on the lookout for companies that make the best pistons in an affordable range to suit your budget. You must however be sure of the piston’s brilliant performance and whether or not can it be used in low or high compression ratios. A good piston is likely to cost you anywhere above $200.
